Birmingham, Alabama - A woman who runs a program for at-risk children in Alabaster recently received recognition from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Dr. Samar Rashdan al-Roomi's husband was taken from their Kuwait City home during the Iraqi invasion in 1991; she never heard from him again. She was left with two sons to raise, so she finished her education and became a communications professor at the Kuwait University College for Women.
